Barker Wildlife Area

Not far from the town of Cimarron is the Elliot Barker Wildlife Area.  It is state property and managed by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.  The property consists of 5,416 acres of canyons, rocky cliffs, and mesa tops.

Despite being close to town, the Barker Wildlife Area feels remote.  Access is via State Highway 204, ten miles of gravel and dirt.  There are five wet stream crossings and the area may be inaccessible by vehicle during wet weather.

In addition to scenery and wildlife, the area is scattered with remnants of historic homesteads and ranches.

One road down the Middle Ponil Creek provides seasonal access through the center of the property.  The remainder of the area can be explored on foot.
