Maxwell N.W.R.
The Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge is 3,699 acres of property managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and is located only 30 miles south of Raton. The primary purpose of the refuge is providing habitat for migratory birds and local wildlife, but the Reserve is also open to the public for fishing, bird watching, sightseeing, and seasonal camping.
The refuge is generally sunny and warm during the summers. The refuge offers open views of the surround highlands, perfect for viewing the afternoon storms during the monsoon season.
Maps, seasonal restrictions, and other information can be found at the US Game and Fish website.
